Simple tricks to sneak more exercise into your day
Perhaps work, kids, chores, sleeping, and eating leave little time for exercise, but don’t give up yet on health and fitness just yet. While you might have trouble fitting in a solid workout, you can find a number of ways to sneak physical activity into your daily routine without taking up any more of your precious time. Sometimes all it takes is a little multi-tasking. With a little creativity, you can accomplish your normal tasks while adding more movement into your day-to-day routine.
How exactly can you perform this awe-inspiring feat of burning calories and getting fit while doing what you already do? If you need a few ideas to get started, look below.
Brushing Your Teeth
It’s something you hopefully do at least twice a day. And chances are you just stand still while you do it. The next time you brush your teeth, however, don’t just stand around wishing you were doing something else. Instead, try doing a few squats or lunges while you’re at it. Leg exercises like these are some of the most effective exercises because they work large muscle groups and can be done pretty much anywhere.
Working at Your Desk
While you may have a job that requires you to sit at a computer, there are ways to boost your calorie burn. Why not switch out your office chair for an exercise stability ball? You may look kind of funny, but who cares? You’ll be using your core muscles all day to stay upright and you’ll be forced to maintain proper posture. Have some nervous energy? Bounce a little on the ball and you’ll burn even more calories.
If you’re not brave enough to sit on a ball, perhaps you could stand at your desk instead of sit. Just place your computer on a stand or stand up while talking on the phone. One hour of standing burns 50 more calories than an hour of sitting.
On Your Coffee and Lunch Break
Instead of surfing the web or scrolling through social media on your break, why not add a little exercise to your day? There are plenty of things you can do at your desk. Squeeze a hand gripper to strengthen your hands and forearms. Keep a set of small dumbbells in your desk and do a few bicep curls or seated triceps extensions. Do single leg raises or push-ups against your desk.
Feeling inspired and not afraid of funny looks? Sit on the edge of you seat with your palms on the edge of a chair and lower your bottom toward the floor. Jog in place or do jumping jacks.
And get an accountability partner by finding a friend to go walking or climb up and down a flight of stairs. The object is to move so get creative in the space you have.
Running Errands
The grocery store, the cleaners, the post office, the pharmacy. Everyone has errands to run and most of them don’t require much movement. Why not make them a little more physically challenging and burn some calories while you’re at it? Park in the farthest parking spot, take the stairs when possible, or do calf raises while standing in line.
Out with Friends
You may be used to going out to eat or to the movies with friends, but why not suggest an activity that involves exercise? Head to the park to walk, throw the Frisbee, or ride bikes. Take a hike in the woods, go dancing, or head to the rink for some ice-skating. Chances are you’ll have a ton of fun and burn calories while you’re at it.
