The weather outside may be frightful, but exercise can still be delightful.
Do cold temperatures keep you from exercise? Do chilly mornings make you want to just stay in bed and skip the gym? Does the frosty air keep you from your normal outdoor workout? They shouldn’t – and they don’t have to.
It’s important to maintain an exercise routine year-round, especially during the holiday months when people tend to overeat. There are plenty of ways to get those recommended hours of physical activity, even when the cold months rear their frozen head at you.
If the freezing temperatures are placing a freeze on your fitness, here are some ideas to get you moving and have some fun at the same time.
Get out There
Call up a friend and head to the mall to walk. You may find window shopping is an added benefit! Or contact a local school or church with an indoor gym for hours you can come in and run or walk laps.
Stay In
A few years ago, you would have been laughed at if your workout included video games. Today they are quickly becoming a great way to stay in shape. It may be snowing outside, but you can be in your warm house spending time with the family and exercising. What could be better? The Wii offers sports such as bowling, baseball, and tennis that require active movement to play. The Wii fit program tests your balance and reflexes. If you enjoy dancing, get a video game that teaches new dance moves. You’ll break a sweat in no time and have fun doing it!
Want something a bit more gym-ish but bad weather keeping you from your normal workout place? Turn your home into a mini-gym. From small hand weights to a treadmill, it’s possible to stay fit while in the comfort of your own home. Those with bad knees may prefer an elliptical machine. People with sore feet may exercise more comfortably on an exercise bike. Another great indoor fitness tool is the simple exercise ball. Great for working your core and abdominals, the exercise ball is also inexpensive.
Bring the Pros to You
You can also buy or rent an exercise DVD or head to the library to borrow one. There are all kinds of videos available to lead you in the exercise of your choice: from step aerobics to kick boxing to Yoga.
Use Your Body
Getting your heart rate up and strengthening your muscles can be done at your home without any equipment at all. Take crunches, push-ups, lunges, squats, or running up the stairs for example. Even those old household chores like vacuuming, mopping, or cleaning the windows can be considered a short workout if they get your heart rate up for more than 10 minutes. In addition, you get the added perk of a clean house.
Take Advantage of Local Resources
Another great resource is your local community center. Many centers offer free or affordable fitness classes. Many also provide the opportunity to get in on a community sports indoor sports league. Contact your local parks and recreation department about joining a basketball, indoor soccer, volleyball, or swim team.
If the cold temperatures have you cooped up inside, don’t let them hinder your amount of physical activity. Find an exercise regimen you enjoy and stick with it.
The Time Has Come
Have you been considering a gym membership but haven’t taken the plunge just yet? Stop procrastinating and take the biggest step possible in your long-term health and well-being by joining!
Use the cold winter months as your opportunity to sign up for that gym membership you’ve been considering. Many gyms now offer month-to-month memberships, which may be what you need to continue your fitness through the winter. While they come at a price, gym and health club memberships offer many benefits from exercise equipment, to personal trainers, to fitness classes, to free babysitting.
